YWCalgary
An interactive exhibit celebrating 150 remarkable women
As part of Canada’s sesquicentennial YWCalgary choose to celebrate 150 of the city’s pioneering, community-building women, past and present. The YW executive wanted the “She Who Dares” exhibit to reflect the tremendous diversity of the women being honoured and amplify their many achievements and contributions.
I led the creative team that created a rich and layered immersive experience that gave voice to 150 trailblazing Canadian women. Mobilizing a team of designers, researchers and writers, we married story content with historical photography on a tight budget and short deadline. The result was a visually arresting and interactive exhibit that delivered on YW’s vision, built the organization’s brand and captured the imagination of the public.
To bring She Who Dares to life, we created deep-dive stories, amplified voices through visual statements and quotes and designed and created a cost-effective, lightweight, easy-to-transport exhibit box system that could be reconfigured for different spaces, buildings and audiences. Our approach to the exhibit design maximized the audience impact by making it flexible and interactive – including amplifying the women’s voices, engaging the audience to provide feedback on the stories within the exhibit, providing many paths through the stories, gamifying the exhibit for younger audience members and creating additional layers of experience through the use of 3-D glasses.
The public launch of She Who Dares attracted hundreds of attendees and significant media attention, providing positive profile for YWCalgary and helping to advance the organization’s advocacy and community-building work.
